What people mean by an Instagram shadowban
Your posts still go out and your followers still see them. New people stop finding you: fewer views from Explore, the Reels tab, hashtag pages and search. Nothing on screen tells you why.
Instagram doesn't use the word "shadowban". It does say that some content and accounts can be ineligible to be recommended to people who don't follow you, under its Recommendation Guidelines. That is the closest official version of a shadowban, and it's something you can check.
A shadowban is different from an action block. An action block stops you from liking, following or commenting and shows a message like "Try again later". A shadowban leaves your actions working and quietly lowers your reach. If you're seeing the message, read the Try again later guide instead.
How to check if you're shadowbanned
- Open Account Status. In the Instagram app, go to your profile, open the menu and look for Account Status in your settings. It was built for professional (creator and business) accounts, and the menu path moves between app versions.
- Check recommendations. It shows whether your content can be recommended to non-followers in Explore, Reels and feed recommendations. It also shows whether your account can appear in Search and Suggested Accounts.
- Read the example. If something is flagged, Instagram shows the post or part of your profile it thinks conflicts with its guidelines. You can edit or delete it, or ask for a review if you think it's a mistake.
- Compare your insights. In your insights, look at reach from non-followers on recent posts against your usual numbers. A sharp drop across several posts is the signal people describe.
If Account Status says you're eligible and reach still fell, the cause is more often the content or the audience than a penalty. Your followers still see your posts either way.
ReelGrow likes posts only from people who follow creators in your niche, at a low pace that stops at the first warning.

- Content that breaks the guidelines. Posts that conflict with Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines or Community Guidelines.
- Spam-like bursts. Many follows, likes or comments in a short time, whether by hand or by a tool.
- Engagement trading. Follow-for-follow, big engagement pods and like exchanges. Reddit users in our research said pods "decrease the watch time and increase the skip rate".
- The wrong audience. One small business owner wrote that an auto-liker "worked like crazy for about 2 weeks then it absolutely killed my engagement". Followers from outside your niche skip your posts, and Instagram reads that.
- Reports. Posts reported by other users.
How to recover from a shadowban
- Fix what Account Status flags. Edit or delete the post, or request a review.
- Stop every tool that acts for you for a week or two. That includes pods and like exchanges.
- Post for the people who already follow you. Watch time and saves from your real audience are the signals you control.
- Engage by hand in your niche, a little each day, with accounts that fit what you post.
- Come back to any growth tool slowly, with low daily caps.
Instagram doesn't publish recovery times. Users describe anything from a few days to several weeks.
Where ReelGrow fits
ReelGrow is a free Chrome extension that likes 2 posts each from people who follow creators like you. It's built around the two things that hurt reach most often: bursts and the wrong audience.
- Niche only. People come from the followers of creators you pick. By default it skips private accounts, accounts with no post in 30 days, accounts under 300 or over 20k followers, and bios with words like giveaway, promo or crypto.
- Low caps. 40 likes on day one, plus 10 only after a clean day, up to 150, with one light day in seven.
- Stops at the first warning for the rest of the day, then comes back 20% slower.
- No like exchange. It only likes posts of people it found through your creators, and every like is listed with its post.
- Bot followers. It scores your followers on your own computer and lists likely bots. You press Remove; nothing is removed on its own.
Instagram doesn't allow automation, so no tool is risk-free. If Account Status shows a recommendation problem right now, pause all automation, ReelGrow included, until it's clear. If you're starting a fresh account, warm it up before you grow it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Instagram shadowban real?
Instagram doesn't use the word. It does confirm that some content and accounts aren't eligible to be recommended to non-followers, and it shows this in Account Status. That's the measurable part of what people call a shadowban.
How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on Instagram?
Open Account Status in your settings and check whether your content can be recommended to non-followers. Then compare reach from non-followers in your insights with your usual numbers. A flag in Account Status plus a drop in reach is the clearest sign.
How long does an Instagram shadowban last?
There's no published time. Fixing flagged posts and stopping spam-like activity is what changes it. Users report anything from a few days to several weeks.
Can bot followers hurt my reach?
They can drag down your engagement rate, because they don't watch or like your posts. ReelGrow lists likely bot followers with the reasons for each, so you can remove them one by one or in a paced batch you start.
Will an auto liker shadowban me?
It can, if it runs in bursts or brings in people outside your niche. Keep caps low, target only your niche, and use a tool that stops at Instagram's first warning. ReelGrow is free to add to Chrome.
