Why warm up a new Instagram account
Warm-up is mostly a UGC word. Brands that hire creators often ask for a new account per campaign and want it warmed to their niche before the first post. New business pages and second accounts face the same start.
A brand new account that follows hundreds of people on day one looks like a bot. One creator put the rule plainly: "MAIN thing is, Is to NOT look like a bot. Don't spam like or follow a bunch of people all at once." A slow first week keeps you clear of that.
The second goal is the feed. When you only watch and like your niche, your Reels feed fills up with it. A Reddit commenter said "accounts you engage with can help Instagram know how to classify you". Some brands check this by asking for a recording of the feed.
An honest note: outside UGC, many people doubt warm-up matters. In one 71-comment Reddit thread about theme pages, most commenters called it a myth or overrated. Nobody has published a controlled test. What a warm-up reliably does is keep your first week slow and on topic.
A 7-day warm-up plan
| Day | Do | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 20 minutes of reels in your niche. Watch most of each one. Like about 1 in 6. Tap "Not interested" on off-niche reels. | Following, comments, DMs, posting |
| 3–4 | The same, plus save a few posts you'd really rewatch. Add a profile photo and a bio. | Follow sprees |
| 5–6 | The same. Follow a handful of niche creators by hand. | Follow and unfollow, links in comments |
| 7 | The same. Check your Reels feed: is it mostly your niche? Then post your first piece. | Starting a growth tool at full speed |
Creators report other schedules too. One brief that gets quoted a lot: "25-30 minutes each day 1-3 and on day 4 you start posting starting with 1 post". Others warm up for 2 to 5 days, or longer for accounts that will carry a lot of brand content. If the brand gives you keywords or creators, use those as your niche.
ReelGrow's Warm up mode watches reels in your niche for 20 minutes a day, for 7 days, from Chrome. Free.
Add to Chrome, freeMistakes that undo a warm-up
- Leaving the niche. "stick to that specific niche or it will ruin your account", as one UGC creator warned. Don't watch your personal interests on the campaign account.
- Bursts. Fifty likes in five minutes reads as automation, whoever does it.
- Following to get follows. Follow-for-follow brings people who leave within days and is the action most often linked to blocks.
- Ignoring warnings. If Instagram shows "Try again later" during the warm-up, stop for the day. Here's what that message means.
- Buying followers or likes. Fake accounts don't watch your posts, which hurts the numbers you're trying to build.
Warm up on autopilot with ReelGrow
The pain with warming up is time. "1-2 hours warming up each account is tedious," one creator wrote. ReelGrow is a free Chrome extension, and its Warm up mode does the watching for you.
- It checks your account first. An account under 30 days old, or with fewer than 9 posts and under 100 followers, counts as new, and Warm up is suggested.
- 20 minutes a day for 7 days. You can set 10 to 40. It watches 60 to 100% of each reel from the creators you pick.
- Likes about 1 in 6 and saves a few. Each has its own switch.
- Never follows and never comments.
- Runs in its own small Chrome window, because Chrome won't play video in a hidden background tab. Chrome needs to stay open.
- Then switches to Grow, which likes 2 posts each from people who follow creators like you, starting at 40 likes a day. You can turn the switch off.
It never asks for your password and stops at Instagram's first warning. Instagram doesn't allow automation, so no tool is risk-free. If a brand's brief forbids tools, warm up by hand with the plan above. When the account is ready to grow, here's what to look for in an Instagram growth tool.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I warm up a new Instagram account?
Seven days is a common choice and is what ReelGrow uses. Creators report anything from 2 days to two weeks. If a brand gives you a schedule, follow theirs.
Can I warm up an Instagram account on a laptop?
Yes, on instagram.com in Chrome. Likes and saves are account actions, so they count wherever you make them. Whether watch time on the website counts the same as in the app isn't documented by Instagram.
Should I post during the warm-up?
Most warm-up plans hold the first post until the account has a few days of normal activity. Filling in your profile photo and bio early is fine.
Does warming up prevent a shadowban?
Nothing guarantees reach. A slow, on-topic first week avoids the bursts that often come before limits. If reach drops later, check Account Status as described in the Instagram shadowban guide.
Is ReelGrow's Warm up free?
Yes. Every feature is free, with no trial and no paid plan. Add it to Chrome, pick your creators and choose Start warm-up.
